Copepod seeding boxes are designed to add enough copepods to your marine tank to start a culture of living ‘pods’. These copepods form a food source for marine fish and corals over time. The box comes with enough bags of copepods to get you started depending on your aquarium size. It also includes a pouch of phytoplankton so that there’s a food source for the pods.
Copepod seeding boxes available:
- Nano – for aquariums that are 100 litres or less
- Medium – for aquariums of between 100 – 250 litres in volume
- Large – for aquariums that are 250 – 500 litres in volume
- XLarge – for aquariums over 500 litres in volume
- Top up – for any sized aquarium, to top up your copepod population (includes more pod food)
How do I get copepods to breed in my tank?
When you get a fresh copepod seeding box from us, the ‘pods’ will be fresh enough that you can add the water in the bag as well as the live copepods into your marine aquarium.
If you have a tank full of hungry fish, the best time to add copepods is after the aquarium lights go out. This way, they stand more chance of surviving and getting into the rockwork to breed. You cannot overdose on copepods, if you have too many in the tank, they will just help to naturally clean the aquarium.
Simply float the copepod bags in the aquarium water for around 10 minutes to allow the temperature of their water to equalise with your fish tank water, then cut the bags open and add all of them at once. You will also receive a pack of phytoplankton with a copepod box. Follow the instructions on the ‘phyto’ pack and add each day for best results.
Sustaining your copepod population
It is important to sustain the population if you want a long-term source of food in your aquarium. For success with copepods, keep up with feeding them on live phytoplankton. This will not only benefit small creatures like pods, but also help to keep corals healthy and well fed too. Once a month it is a good idea to top up on copepods by adding a few extra bags in the same way that you did with your first delivery of a copepod seeding box.
