What fish eat live brine shrimp?

Live brine shrimp which are available in the United Kingdom to feed your fish.

Live brine shrimp can be fed to almost any marine or tropical freshwater fish.

The only exception that I can think of are fish fry, this is because the brine shrimp that we sell tend to be between 5 – 10mm. So, adult brine shrimp will be too big for them.

If you have fish fry, we also sell hatch in the bag brine shrimp, which is very small and highly nutritious.

Less waste

Live brine shrimp will live for several hours when introduced into an aquarium. And so, feeding with this food gives your fish plenty of time to find and devour it. In turn, there will be less uneaten food compared to traditional feeding with dry or frozen feeds.

Here’s just a few fish that love to eat live brine shrimp:

How do I store live brine shrimp?

Brine shrimp should be stored in a cool place in the unopened bag they are sold in, it is advisable to use as soon as possible, but brine shrimp will keep for a few days if kept cool and out of sunlight. Once opened, if not all used in one feed, they need to be kept in the water they were supplied in. Do not replace this with fresh water because brine shrimp live in slightly salted water. The best way to store an opened bag is to place it upright in a tall glass.

Fresh live brine shrimp that are sent by post within the UK to feed any type of fish.

Should I pour the whole bag in?

If feeding brine shrimp to freshwater fish, strain the contents of the bag through a net with a mesh size no larger than 500 microns (0.5mm). Then add just the shrimp to the aquarium from the net to avoid adding salt water to your freshwater tank. For marine aquariums it is OK to add the entire contents to the aquarium, however, if you prefer, there is no harm in filtering through a net as above.

How many fish will one bag of live food feed?

One bag of brine shrimp is usually the right quantity for a single feed for aquariums of over 60cm (24 inches). Obviously this depends on the amount and type of fish in your tank – the bulk of the brine shrimp that you feed into an aquarium should be consumed within 15-20 minutes. If it is, you know that you are not overfeeding. Don’t worry if there are a few odd ones left after this time as they will live for up to 5 hours in fresh water and longer in a marine tank. Your fish will then hunt them down and eat them, providing them with a natural treat!
